BATHSOUNDEXPERIMENT
THE SOUND OF BATH
About the project
I have always been intrigued by the capturing of moments through sound, how we as people experience them and our own interpretations of them, being influenced by our thoughts, feelings and the experiences we bring to that point in time.
My interest in field recordings enabled me to capture my moments and to experience it again at a later point. The problem with moments, is that they’re one of a kind, experienced in the place and that time.
The inspiration for this project came from my love of nature, the local community, and stories. When you are following the two tunnels route, you are treated to some of Baths most spectacular views. You are struck by the history, left picturing horses pulling barges along the canal, or trains speeding through tunnels uncontrolled. There are a multitude of memories and moments that have happened in these spots.
The eight points along the 12 mile circuit were chosen based on landmarks or interesting historical points.
Each composition is my own reflection or interpretation of that particular moment, the things that stood out, or my own thoughts on the experience. In this vein I made the conscious decision to not wear headphones during the recording, as I was interested in my own experience of the moment and made detailed notes at the time. Sometimes it may have been an event such as bird song or a vehicle passing, at other points it was a conversation that had happened unbeknown.
The intention for the project was to create a musical adventure for the audience, it is therefore expected that the audience should complete the circuit for themselves and listen to my moments while experiencing their own. There is no starting or end point, the audience can join the circuit at any point.
